The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
