Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
He was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
