British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
