In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
