They're Applying in America What They Did to Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of several weeks, the American president started showing the public his designs for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of deaths due to his slashing to international aid amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently research forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the Earth' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader try to upend the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into an icon of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense of him since they are skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly definitely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The child matures in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching is about love for other people, particularly for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to present the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when someone steals your coat you should give the person your additional clothing too.

The obvious and clear fact that the Savior of the gospels requests a kind of profound affection concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christianity rather a controversial faith: engaging for the populace, but because of its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Battle for the Highest of Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has been great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the best parts within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by relationship to the finest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured through connection to elements that cause it to be distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of Jesus. In both situations does it mean acting as if the most negative about the nation and Christian faith never occurred; it represents both humility and conviction, a combination that serious national faithful ought to accept.
